  What Is an SBR?

   A Short-Barreled Rifle (SBR) is a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches or an overall length under 26 inches. These fall under the National Firearms Act (NFA) and require federal registration. Important: Always verify that SBR ownership is legal in your state before proceeding. Laws vary, and it’s your responsibility to comply with all federal, state, and local regulations.

The Legal Path to Owning an SBR

The process is straightforward and simple when working with a licensed dealer. Thanks to modern ATF eForms and recent changes, approvals are faster than ever.

1. Confirm Eligibility and Choose Your Firearm You must be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and legally eligible to purchase a firearm (no prohibiting factors). 2. Find a Local FFL/SOT Dealer Locate a gun shop or dealer holding both a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and a Special Occupational Taxpayer (SOT) stamp. These dealers handle NFA transfers. If purchasing from APF Armory® online, we transfer the firearm to your chosen local FFL/SOT via an ATF Form 3 (a quick dealer-to-dealer transfer).
   
   
3. Work with Your Dealer to Initiate the Transfer Purchase the SBR through your dealer. They will guide you through the paperwork. Many now use the ATF’s eForms system for faster processing.
   
   
4. Complete ATF Form 4 (Application for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearm)
   
   This is the key form for transferring an existing NFA item like a manufactured SBR.
   • Provide your personal information, fingerprints (typically on FD-258 cards), and passport photos (for individual ownership).
   • For a trust or LLC, include relevant documents and responsible person info.
   • Notify your local Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) — this is a notification, not an approval request. Your dealer submits the eForm 4 electronically, along with any required supporting documents.
     
     
5. Wait for ATF Approval The ATF conducts a background check and reviews your application. Current wait times (as of mid-2026): eForm 4 approvals average just 4–6 days for individuals and around 18–26 days for trusts — dramatically faster than paper submissions.
   
   As of January 1, 2026, the $200 NFA transfer tax has been eliminated for SBRs (and most other items except machine guns and destructive devices), making ownership even more accessible.
   
   
6. Pick Up Your SBR Once approved, the ATF issues your digital tax stamp (affixed to the approved Form 4). Your dealer notifies you, you complete a standard Form 4473, and you take possession. Always keep a copy of your approved Form 4 with the firearm.
